White's king's pawn push invited Black to take the centre but supported a possible P-Q4 plan.
Black takes the opportunity to advance his Queen's Pawn to the vacant centre, taking control of White's K4(e4) square for what usually becomes either a Queen's Pawn Game or a Bird's Opening by transposition. B-Alt.
