THE QUEEN'S FIANCHETTO DEFENCE
aka. The Owen Defence

White's P-K4(e4) attacked Q5+KB5(d5+f5) to control the centre and opened paths for his (her) KB+Q.
Black leaves the "Épine Dorsale" for the rare Queen's Fianchetto Defence. The queen's side fianchetto [ie. planning 2..B-Kt2(b7)] was a 19th Century favourite of Englishman John Owen. Revived by some London players in 1974. B-Alt.
