THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT
White plays the Q-side gambit, advancing his (her) QBPawn to QB4(c4) to draw Black off-centre by a 3.PxP..QxP, 4.Kt-QB3, 5.P-K4 threat. Unlike the King's (usually accepted) the Queen's Gambit is not really a sacrifice, and is usually declined (despite leading to difficult positional play) as Black can take but cannot safely hold on to the pawn offered. W-Alt.
