White's QBP contested for his Q4(d4) square so as to enable 3.P-Q4 and make a strong centre.
Black posts his King's Pawn on K3(e6) to open KB+Q lines and contest for Q4(d5) control, starting a variant that can transpose into the French [note 1.P-K4..P-K3 defines the French, but this rare position is more likely to arise via the Sicilian]. B-Alt.
