STAUNTON SYSTEM
A series of moves originally designed by Howard Staunton (1810-74) for both Black (shown) and White (the reverse, by the same series of moves). Neglected after his retirement until Nimzowitsch re-introduced it in the 1920's, it has since become standard play for Black in particular. Combining a king's bishop fianchetto with ..P-QB4, ..P-K3 and ..KKt-K2, it often arises from the Sicilian Defence.
