White chose a non-committal king's knight, to deter 1..P-K4 but otherwise allow Black the vacant centre (in order for White to have an early target to attack).
Black also rejects the centre and responds with a closed reply, pushing his King's Knight's Pawn out one square so as to contest his K4(e5) by a king's bishop fianchetto on the long dark diagonal. B-Alt.
