THE CHINESE CALENDER

Here's a new mnemonic device for recalling the 12 animal-signs of the Chinese yearly cycle. It is in the form of a key syllable-table. Note the similar "s-h" and "sh" in the 2nd row, and the four "oh" vowels across row 3:

RATO-TI--IT
DRAG-S-H-SH!!!!!
..Mo....Ro....Do....Bo..

(Rat - Ox - Tiger - Rabbit
Dragon - Snake - Horse - Sheep
Monkey - Rooster - Dog - Boar)

January 1900 was a "Rat" year, and it re-occurred in 1900+12 (and +24, +36, +48 etc). Thus 1952 is 1948+4, which is a "Year of the Dragon" (being the 4th sign after Rat, or the 5th year of the cycle).

The only symbol shared by both the Chinese Zodiac and the Western Zodiac is the sheep - being Aries the ram.
