OSCAR-WINNING BEST FILMS

Here's a mnemonic means of remembering the most recent Oscar Best Film award winners of every year from 1979-97. Remember that "79" reversed is "97", and then recall the relevant film titles as pairs or triplets of associated names:

79 ->|<- 97

Kramers - People
Chars of fire - Gandhi
En'dear' - Ama'deus'
Africa - Platoon
Emperor (reign) - Rain (man) - Driving (miss)
Wolves - Lambs
Unforgiven - Schindler
Gump - Brave
English - Titanic

Kramer vs. Kramer ('79), Ordinary People ('80)
Chariots of Fire ('81), Gandhi ('82)
Terms Of Endearment ('83), Amadeus ('84)
Out Of Africa ('85), Platoon ('86)
The Last Emperor, Rain Man, Driving Miss Daisy ('87-'89)
Dances With Wolves ('90), The Silence Of The Lambs ('91)
Unforgiven ('92), Schindler's List ('93)
Forrest Gump ('94), Braveheart ('95)
The English Patient ('96), Titanic ('97)

"American Beauty" won the 1999 Best Picture Oscar (rather than "Star Wars I", which could otherwise have produced an additional "Love/Wars" pairing for '98/99). Therefore to complete the list, remember...

U.K. Love - U.S. Beauty
Shakespeare In Love ('98), American Beauty ('99)

If familiar with the film subject matter, the order from 1979-97 can also be remembered in groups of four or five by small phrases:

79 - divorced people run (over) Gandhi's TOE
- Kramer/Ordinary-P/Chariots/Gandhi/T.O.Endearment
84 - Mozart O.P.E.Ra
- Amadeus/Out-Of.../Platoon/Emperor/Rainman
89 - D.D.T. silent killer!
- Driving/Dances/The Silence.../Unforgiven
92 - U.N. List, For scots/English ship!
- UNforgiven/S.List/For.Gump/Br'heart/E.Patient/Titanic
