Black may be unwise advancing his Queen's Pawn to challenge White's QBP. This gambit reply, named after the initial English and Scandinavian (or Centre Counter) Def. moves, deters 2.Kt-QB3 (..P-Q5!) but can cause Black to lose time with his queen. B-Alt.
