Black's usual Queen's Knight reply develops a minor piece, defends his (her) endangered king's pawn (ie. 3.KtxP..KtxKt will gain Black a piece for a pawn) and deters White from playing an aggressive 3.P-Q4 for control of the centre. All moves so far have targeted the four central squares. B-Alt.
