White's king's pawn push invited Black to take the centre but supported a possible P-Q4 plan.
Black develops his King's Knight to control White's K4(e4) and contest the centre by indirect means. This line usually becomes either a Queen's Pawn Game or a Bird's Opening by transposition. B-Alt.
