Black's Pawn advance to Q4(d5) frees his QB, deters 4.P-K4 and creates a fixed centre (mutually blocked Ps after an exchange from adjoining files). The same position arises more as an Exchange Var. of the QGD where the trade-off is on White's Q5(d5) rather than (here) Black's Q5(d4).
